Important SRC Meeting this Monday - Universal Enrollment

The SRC is holding a planning and strategy meeting this Monday, January 13, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium at 440 N. Broad Street. It is important that parents are represented and attend. The topic is Universal Enrollment. The district plans to discuss what this is, as well as what options for proceeding this are. Things to consider:

  • Initially, the district talked about Universal Application - which makes sense, especially when it comes to Charter Schools, but it has since moved on to Universal Enrollment.
  • UE would involve each student filling out one application listing their five choices for high school. Requirements for special admit/magnet schools would stay in place. However, there is talk of a one-option selection, meaning that students are assigned to one school (as opposed to being accepted to several and then being able to make a choice.)
  • Who will participate in this? Some are suggesting that it be for district, charter and Catholic schools. Will all charter schools be required to participate or will it be optional? Does having religious schools participate violate Pennsylvania's constitution?
  • Who will run it? There is talk of having a non-profit entity run this, eventually charging a fee for each student application. Who would "contracted enrollment" benefit and what does it mean for the district and our children?

It is very important that we are aware of this proposed possibility and that if something is enacted, that we make sure that the best interests of our district schools and our children are honored. The meeting will consist of several presentations on what is UE, including proposals that are out there now, as well as some examples of what is being done in other cities. Then there will be facilitated round table discussion to document participant input. Please try to attend!

Our Winter Bazaar will be held this coming week on Tuesday, December 10th and Wednesday, December 11th (not on the 12th as originally planned).

Volunteers are needed!

It is an extremely busy event and we need help to make it a success.

The bazaar will be held Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 AM-3:00 PM.

We hope that at minimum you attend the Bazaar with your child's classroom, but if you have some additional time to help, please let Andrea Layden know so we can make sure that it is an event that all children can enjoy.

Anyone can volunteer to help and bi-lingual assistance is always needed.

The Winter Bazaar will allow children a safe place to buy gifts with the satisfaction of doing it on their own. You should agree upon a budget with your child and help them plan for shopping. Please send money in with your child on the day their class will attend as many will not have the opportunity to return to the bazaar.

The bazaar features something for everyone with items ranging from $1.00-$7.00.

If you have not received information regarding the sale, are interested in getting involved or have additional questions, please contact Andrea.

McCall's Winter Concert will be held on Friday, December 13th. Assemblies will be held at 9:15AM, 10:15AM, and 2:15PM.
