Thank you to everyone who came to Coffee with the Principal and the H&S meeting on Wednesday.

The information about reading expectations and leveling was really informative.

Bake Sale Thanks

Another thank you to everyone who volunteered at and for the bake sale! With your help, we raised $1,000. Thank you to Jefferson University and Dr. Sergio Jimenez and to McCall neighbors who supported us.

  • Roz's Homemade Goodies (510 South 5th St.)
  • South Street Bagels (613 South 3rd St.)
  • Marriott Hotel (12th & Market)

We would like someone to take over this committee. During the next few years, important elections (and primaries) for governor, mayor, and president will be held. Let's not leave money on the table! Thank you.

Attention Drivers - Watch where you Park!

Ofc. Brown has been trained and advised to ticket the vehicles illegally parked at McCall. We urge you to make sure that you park in an authorized parking space (not blocking teachers or neighbor driveways) or you may receive a ticket.

It is especially important that you do not park your vehicles on 6th street while buses are trying to drop off or pick up our children. This can create a safety hazard so please be mindful.

Picture Re-take Day will be Tuesday, November 26th from 9-10:30 AM

If you missed your photos, please have your child attend. Packages can be purchased at lifetouch.com.

If you are able to help out or have additional questions, please contact Frank Shaffer at fgsgems@verizon.net.

Ways to Help Give Back to McCall

The easiest way for you to earn money for McCall:

Download the Shoparoo app!

Easily downloadable on your phone or computer, and all you have to do is scan your grocery receipts once you are done shopping. Most grocery stores are applicable and a percentage of your sales are donated back to the school. Do so today and raise money just by food shopping. McCall has already raised $25 with people just submitting their shopping receipts!!!

They are running a November/December bonus for receipts from many other retailers (department stores, toy stores, etc) so upload those receipts and earn money for McCall. Its fun to see the leaderboards too, so shop people shop!!

Escrip

You can earn even more money for your school by adding your shopper card numbers to escrip.com.

McCall Home & School Association is registered under number 6534828.

Register your Superfresh, Genaurdi's, Pathmark and other grocery cards to the school and every time you make a purchase, McCall earns money. You can even get double rewards with escrip.com and shoparoo. Work both programs to earn much needed funds for our school.

We Need Volunteers to Register Shoppers Cards

We will be manning 2 tables at the 2 Superfresh locations in order to get additional shoppers to register their shopping cards to McCall School. It is free and easy way to get friends and neighbors to help our school. We need your help---

  • At Superfresh on 5th Street on Thursday, November 21st, from 10AM Until 7PM
  • At Superfresh on 10th & South on Friday, November 22nd, from 10Am Until 7PM

Please sign up to take a 1 hour shift. Contact Sharri Horowitz to volunteer and reserve your time slot!

Box Tops

Every Little Bit Helps! We need your help to collect Box Top$ for McCall because that means $$$$ for McCall.

It will take less than 2 minutes to register (create user name and password) at www.boxtops4education.com. Assign your support on the site to McCall and sign up for email updates. The site shows what products have Box Top$ coupons, contains shopping coupons you can print, and regularly runs contests that can win thousands of Box Top$ for McCall.

Last year we raised over $1,600 through our Boxtop program!!

Also note that if you sign onto www.boxtops4education.com before you make your online retail purchases, a portion of those purchases will earn money (boxtops) for McCall. Check to see if the retailer participates before purchasing!

Volunteers and Bakers are needed!

McCall's Election Day Bake Sale will be held this Tuesday, November 5 at both McCall and Jefferson Alumni Hall from 7am to 8pm! The voters are our target audience. McCall still requests your assistance to raise some money (see below). Thank you in advance!

We still have 7-8am, 8-9am and 7-8pm one-hour shifts available. Perfect for before or after work, or even if you're an early riser! Thank you to everyone who is taking a shift. It is fun for the kids -- our best sellers! Detailed information will be emailed separately. Email horowitz.sharri@gmail.com to volunteer.

For baked goods, please individually wrap each item in clear plastic or a baggie. Submit an index card listing the ingredients (baked items from scratch sell the best). Bring in items (label with child's name and room and your email so we can thank you) on Monday (before, during, or right after school) and place in plastic container in officer under teacher mailboxes. Volunteer at McCall

The Silk Road

How would you like to be involved with a project to promote cultural awareness and connections at McCall? We are looking for parents, teachers, and students-anyone in the McCall community who wants to make a difference at the school.

The Silk Road is a cross-cultural educational and fund raising initiative proposed for McCall Elementary School starting in the fall of 2013, inspired by the centuries old Silk Road that followed several routes between East Asia and the Mediterranean. Like the original Silk Road, the project will promote and foster cultural awareness and understanding among all students at the school, which has a 60% Asian student body. The Silk Road will be used to enrich other events at the school — movie night to name one example, where the movie would relate to the Silk Road, and a presentation would be made before the move about an item of trade or culture.

Time Frame: October 2013 to May 2014

Dates: TBD

Several events will be planned during a calendar week and weekend, with the highlight to be McCall's annual Chinese New Year's celebration and banquet, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 20nd at the school.

Email Jesse Gardner (McCall parent) for more info and to get involved. Step up and be a leader-everyone can make a difference!

After School Options

McCall Cybrary will Open on Monday, October 28

Cybrary Will Open on Monday!

It is with great joy that we send this note informing you that McCall's Cybrary will open on Monday, October 28th with Ms. Phillips at the helm!!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our cybrary fund, but our fundraising goal is still short. McCall Home & School fronted the $6,000 shortfall needed to bring Ms. Phillips back to McCall. Please help us return the $6,000 to the H&S fund or we will not be able to fund Playworks for all the remaining months of the school year!

Every little bit helps, so participate where you can so we can fund the necssary things of McCall. We are still in need of every family to contribute financially!

Teachers will once again begin to visit the cybrary with the children beginning next week. Your teacher will be handing out the Cybrary Permission Slip (PDF), reminding parents/children of their responsibility to take out books.

Weekly Update October 18, 2013

Our Cybrary Goal is just $6,000 Short and We Are in the Home Stretch!

Thank you to all who have supported our "Save our Cybrary" campaign. We have collected $51,000 of the $57,000 needed to complete our goal!

Please send in your payment in an envelope with your child or make a credit card donation via PayPal!

We are all very excited to hear that Governor Corbett will release additional funds to the Philadelphia School District. Unfortunately, we assume that we will not be receiving any of these funds at McCall.

While McCall still has many needs, we believe other schools will receive a full time guidance counselor, secretary, and nurse from this disbursement (which we were already able to purchase for this school year). Should we be receiving additional funds from the city or state, we will update you.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make Picture Day run so smoothly.

If you missed the Community Design Collaborative reveal, check out the plans (PDF file).
